Kafari, the musical alias of Portland, Maine-based pianist, composer, beatmaker, rhythm bones player, and teaching artist Ahmad Muhammad, brings together ambient piano, spiritual jazz, experimental hip hop, and improvisation. Drawing inspiration from an eclectic range of influences, such as Dorothy Ashby, J Dilla, Frédéric Chopin, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Kafari moves fluidly between composition, beatmaking, improvisation, and ambient piano. Kafari has performed across the United States with artists including André 3000, Sudan Archives, Max García Conover, and Haley Heynderickx. He is also an active teaching artist and a cherished member of Maine’s creative community. Kafari will perform recent works with the Juno 106 synthesizer, jazz samples, rhythm bones, and dreamlike electronic textures at Bates College’s Gomes Chapel on Monday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m.
