The Kazushige Hirasawa Professor of History at Bates from 1988 until 2013, Atsuko Hirai was known as a witty and exacting teacher and an eminent historian of modern Japan. Hirai, who died July 14, will be remembered by speakers including President Clayton Spencer; Moody Family Professor of Performing Arts James Parakilas; Reynolds Professor Emeritus of History John Cole; Fisher Qua '06; and former Multifaith Chaplain William Blaine-Wallace.
